Typically, I present to you healthy meals or beverages – this cocktail is NOT that. But, it is simple and completely delicious. Ready to make a jam cocktail? Sure you are, live a little.

In addition to cooking from scratch, I also love the world of mixology. I don’t know that I’d call this a “craft cocktail” necessarily, but the strawberry rhubarb jam does provide a lovely depth often found in carefully crafted mixed drinks.

Use a Quality Jam

For this jam cocktail, I use Strawberry Rhubarb Jam that I’ve made from scratch and preserved (via water bath canning). The recipe I follow for the jam is found in the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving. It incorporates fresh strawberries, rhubarb, lemon juice, pectin, and sugar. The rich, fruity flavors come out beautifully in this drink.

Shaken, NOT Stirred

Aside from using a quality jam, the second most important necessity is the technique. To really emulsify the jam into the liquor, you must shake it. And I mean, shake it with intention and a big smile for a good 20 to 30 seconds. I use a Boston Shaker but you could use a Collins. An immersion blender or electric mixer would probably work as well. Though, there’s a nostalgia in giving it a good ole shake. Try it, if you’ve never done it.

This Jam Cocktail Build Is So Simple

Place the jam, lemon juice (bottled or fresh), and your liquor of choice in one side of your Boston Shaker. All ingredient measurements are listed in the recipe below.

Fill the other half of your shaker tin with ice. Fill it with ice. You want plenty of ice to chill the drink but it also will beat the jam into submission, breaking it up so it incorporates into the liquor.

Close the tins together and check that there is a tight seal before you shake. You don’t want your jam cocktail getting all over you… or your kitchen. Now, shake as hard as you can for just about as long as you can (20-30 seconds).

Using a Julep or Hawthorne strainer to hold back the ice, double strain the liquids into a chilled cocktail glass by pouring through a mesh sieve.
