I can’t believe how easy it is to make dish soap without all of the toxins. Now that I’ve switched over to consistently making my own, I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Even the popular “natural” brands of dish soap that you and I are both familiar with, have much too strong a smell for me compared to this DIY dish soap. (Hint: if something smells fake, it probably is.)

The multiple potentially harmful chemicals found in dish soaps is what caused me to explore how to make dish soap myself. Some of the ingredients in dish soap cause skin irritation and can even agitate your lungs. Do you want that slippery, typically dyed substance “cleaning” your dishes? Neither do I.

Did you know you can infuse white vinegar with lemons?

An optional step to make this dish soap is to infuse vinegar with lemon peels. I’m always trying to get creative by using food in as many ways as possible before feeding it to the chickens or compost pile. So, when I juice a lemon, I add the peel to a jar and top it with white distilled vinegar, and store the jar under my sink until I’m ready to use it. The vinegar preserves the lemon, allowing the lemon to infuse a lovely fragrance into the vinegar. What a beautiful symbiotic relationship!

Also: lemon is a natural degreaser as well as antibacterial. It’s the perfect addition to any homemade cleaning product. (Psst… just put this lemon infused vinegar into a spray bottle as your all purpose cleaner – it works great!)

Ready for how easy this is?

You’ll need a squirt bottle with a lid. (I repurposed an old one rather than buying a new one.) Add the hot water and salt to the squirt bottle. Swirl the bottle around to dissolve the salt. *All ingredient measurements are listed below.

Next, add the vinegar (infused with lemon if you can – see the notes above about this) and the Sal Suds. Place the bottle cap back on the bottle and shake it vigorously to mix the soap.

Congrats! You’re done. Use this natural soap without the toxins on all those dishes that hold your family’s lovely home-cooked meals.

    • Ahh great, Alain! You can even take it a step further… zest and freeze the zest before juicing and preserving. 😉
