If you’re looking for the best tea for a sore throat, you’ve found it. As I’m writing this, I’m sipping on some of this warm and healing sage tea. It typically does the trick when I feel a cold coming on, so I wanted to share this recipe with you.

The Ingredients

Sage: This is the most important ingredient if your intention is to ward off a sore throat. Sage has antibacterial properties often used for treating sore throats and coughs. Sage is hardy in many regions, so grow some in your herb garden to use in pork dishes or as a sickness remedy. (If I already have a sore throat, I will chew on a leaf for a bit as treatment.)

Garlic: Commonly used for high blood pressure, this little root vegetable is good for overall health. It’s anti-inflammatory and excellent for treating the common cold.

Ginger: Spicy and delicious, ginger helps with inflammation and contains high amounts of antioxidants. It is the best natural medicine (that I’ve found) for soothing an upset stomach. It also helps with morning sickness and motion sickness. (I chew on some ginger before going deep sea fishing or getting on an airplane.)

Lemon: When I feel the hint of a cold coming on, I immediately take vitamin C and Zinc. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C as well (always try to get your nutrients from foods rather than supplements). Hot water and lemon is known to soothe a sore throat and also aid in nasal congestion.

Honey: Don’t you love that honey is a health food? Make sure yours is local and raw for the maximum benefits. It’s an excellent cough suppressant, reduces inflammation in your throat, and is a natural antibiotic to help you heal.

Tea Bag: I typically drink tea close to bedtime, so Chamomile tea is the type I suggest for this recipe. In addition to soothing sore throats, it also helps calm you into sleep.

The Method

I have all the ingredient measurements listed in the recipe below, but you can adjust this to taste with what you have on hand from my recommended list or by adding other favorites.

Making this tea is pretty simple. In a small stock pot over medium-high heat, add all the ingredients except the honey and bring it to a simmer.

Simmer a few minutes to allow the flavors and medicinal benefits to penetrate the water fully, then remove it from the heat.

Pour the tea through a fine mesh strainer into a mug. Add the honey, stir, and sip.

Alternatively, follow the first steps but add the honey in the pot and stir, then pour everything into a teapot like this one with a removeable infuser to allow a longer steep.

Leave a comment below letting me know if you tried this recipe and what you thought! What else do you love in your tea? Cayenne and cinnamon are some more favorites of mine….

I love the tea, it’s well balanced and way more interesting than an everyday cup of tea. It helped sooth my raw throat, and I will stay with it a few more times as I continue through the healing.

    • Ken, thank you for taking the time to comment! I so appreciate it. And I’m glad you like the tea! I hope it becomes your standard anytime you feel a bit “off.”
